About Scanbio - A leading animal feed ingredients supplier

Back in 1989, Bjugn Industrier A/S breathed new life into a declining industry in a remote part of Norway’s west coast through a management buy-out. Two fishmeal plants had been working on the Fosen peninsula, where Trondheim fjord meets the Atlantic Ocean, from the early years of the last century, but with the downturn of the once abundant herring fishery in the seventies, the end had come. Freshly caught fish became more and more difficult to come by in commercial tonnages, so a different way of working had to be found.

Ensiling is a simple, low-cost method of conserving the by-products from fish packing plants, or by-catch from trawlers. At the time, it enabled a new processing technique to be exploited. Collecting the conserved raw material could be done with maximum efficiency, even from the remotest places. Bjugn Industrier A/S came into being as the first plant of its kind in the northern half of Norway, making feed quality fish protein concentrate and fish oil.

New jobs were created, the business grew and in 1996, the company changed its name to Scanbio Bjugn, to unify what was by now a group of companies, with plants in nearby Lysøysundet and at Midsund, further down the coast in Møre county.

By then, Scanbio Group had grown into being one of Norway’s leading animal feed ingredient suppliers, with immaculate green credentials, turning what was then waste into a valuable resource. That was the only time you will see the ‘W’ word on these pages. We refer to our raw material as ‘by-product’, or ‘feedstock’, because what people used to throw away, is now our daily bread. Of course, by-product from non-salmonids (pelagic and demersal species) can be made into feed for salmon and trout – but what happens to the by-products from those species?

Luckily for us, as the wild fishery stopped growing, so the European salmon farming industry grew and we grew with it. Our feedstock from aquaculture is classified into category 3 under the terms of EU1774-2002 Animal By-Products Regulations. Salmonid derived cat. 3 ingredients can be made into feed for non-salmonid fish species, such as sea bass and sea bream, as well as for land animals like pigs or poultry.

The group is today headed by holding company Scanbio ASA and has six divisions; Scanbio Bjugn, Scanbio Lysøysund, Scanbio International, Scanbio Scotland, Estra and Milpro and has offices in Fosen, Trondheim and Båtsfjord, Norway and in Fort William, Scotland.
